Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox both auditioned for the ninth season of American idol in Chicago, Illinois. At the time of the auditions, neither DeWyze nor Bowersox could have ever guessed that several months later, there would be gamblers betting on which would win the competition.
From the beginning of this season, DeWyze and Bowersox have been considered among the favorites to become the next American Idol. A couple of years ago, online sports books started posting odds on who would win once the final twelve was reached. This year, DeWyze and Bowersox have been the gambling favorites through many of the live shows.
Last week, Casey James was eliminated from the competition, leaving DeWyze and Bowersox to battle it out for the title. Heading into Tuesday night’s finale, DeWyze, from Mount Prospect, Illinois, is the betting favorite.
DeWyze has odds of -200 to win. That means a gambler would have to bet $200 to win $100. That seems like overwhelming odds for Bowersox to overcome. The lone female left has odds of anywhere from +140 to +225, depending on the sports book.
To understand how far DeWyze has come during the live shows, one needs to only look at the opening betting odds. DeWyze was +5500 when the competition began, meaning anyone who saw his star power from the beginning, would be poised to win $5,500 had they made a $100 bet at the start.
Bowersox was a strong choice from the beginning. The opening line on Bowersox winning was +600. Although she has been steady, the sports book odds indicate that she will have to have the performances of her life is she is going to upset DeWyze.
The finale is set for 8PM on Tuesday night on FOX. The results show will be held on Wednesday, with many former contestants and winners set to perform. This week will also be judge Simon Cowell’s last on American Idol. Cowell decided to walk away from the show at the end of the season, and American idol will immediately be looking for his replacement once the ninth season has concluded.
